Question about Maxtor M3 Portable
How do I go about formatting this external hard drive to make it work with my Mac? I don't have much computer knowledge...

just plug it in and it should work. my 10.6 snow leopard system recognises all external hard drives that are also used on windows without any problems.
Alternatively, buy NTFS Read Tool from Paragon and have no problems, then it's plug & play.
