How can I troubleshoot DisplayPort cable connection problems?

I'm currently using MiniDP to DP, unfortunately I can't try DP to DP at the moment. HDMI works fine, but for me the laptop hangs and flickers after 1-2 minutes when using DP. The cable works, the monitor is also recognised by the laptop with an exact name and displayed as PG258Q.
The monitor itself shows that there is no DP signal, although the monitor is recognised by the laptop.
