How big is the USB-C connector, does it fit through the rather small opening in an iPhone case from Apple, or does it have to be removed to plug it in?

Measured with calipers, the plastic plug sleeve has external dimensions of 10.5 x 5.5mm in cross-section. The shape is the same as the USB plug.
