No, you do not need a usb connection. You can connect the keyboard directly to up to three different devices such as a laptop or tablet, and select the desired device directly using the buttons at the top right. The dongle is not necessary
Yes, the keyboard only works via a 2.4 GHz dongle, i.e. you must have a free USB-A connector.
