The Twain driver can be installed and configured using ScanbackUtility. Afterwards, AbbyFineReader, for example, should work. But without guarantee, as not tested.

With the Mac:
1. system settings
2. start "Printer&Scanner
3. select printer
4. select "Scan" (is set to "Print" by default)
5. select "Open Scanner
6. make settings (flatbed, storage location, etc.) -> set the scanning area
7. select "Test" with "Overview" or select "Scan" directly.

Works great for me. I have the printer in the local network (LAN).
