Hello Ansgar - unfortunately this does not work ;-(
Bought the cable for a similar purpose, it only ever goes from the newer standard to the older and not vice versa. My MacBook Retina 15'' (Mid2012 - Display Port TB2) cannot operate my LG 4k display (USB-C) via this way.
