Does the fan outlet have to be left free on the right or can I place it against a wall?

I have had no problems placing the printer in a 40 cm wide cabinet (Ikea Metod) for 2 years, with both sides left and right completely against the cabinet wall. But the printer was not in continuous operation either (few single pages per print job).
