Does the audio splitter also work the other way round? Two sources to one receiver?
no, it can only split one input to two outputs. The input signal is identical on both outputs. A merger (i.e. two inputs on one output) cannot be built purely optically. This requires electronics that decode the data stream and then mix them together.
I can't answer that. I only use 2 headphones on the headphone output.
