Does anyone know how to get the scanner running under macOS BigSur, preferably without spending money on a 3rd-party driver?

I can confirm this. Download the latest Twain driver from the website and the latest version of the CaptureOnTouch software. My version is 4.5.19

Yes, it works for me under BigSur and with the free software CaptureOnTouch.
