Can you connect a laptop MacBook Pro 2019 (Thunderbolt 3) with an iMac 27'' 2011 (Thunderbolt 2) to use the latter as a display? What is the difference with a Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter (+ extension female-male)? Thanks

It works for me too: I use a MacBook Pro 16" (2019) and an iMac 27" (late 2013). However, it no longer works with a later model of the iMac with 5K resolution.

With the laptop USB-C 3.1 to Mini-Displayport cable connected to the Imac (older machines work without problems, see on the net about monitor transfer). The Imac screen is immediately transferred. Perfect.

Hello, it also worked for me on the iMac late 2010. But it only seems to work in one direction, which makes sense since we want to use the larger monitor of the 27" iMac.

Regarding the difference: without being completely sure, I think this adapter converts the protocol from the MacbookPro (probably Thunderbolt3) to DVI2 - a chip does not "sit" between the two sockets. The old iMac doesn't "understand" Thunderbolt3, and apparently the MacbookPro doesn't "speak" dvi2.

Hello - Yes, this worked for me (my MacbookPro with MacOS Catalina) can use the 27" Nile screen from the iMac late 2010 with Yosemite).
As soon as I connect the cable, the MacPro takes over the screen of the iMac without me having to press any keys (according to Apple, I had to activate the screen mode with F12 or similar on the iMac).
Good luck.
