Can, or could, a loose contact in the connection cable between the headphones cause the sound to drop out on one pair of headphones?

Yes, of course. But it's also possible that nothing works at all. Usually, the circuit board with the Bluetooth module is in one earpiece and the battery and charging technology in the other. So the power has to go from one earpiece to the other and so does the audio signal. As a rule, however, the cables are very stable, so it takes a lot to produce a wobble.
