With a wider frequency response range and a higher SPL limit sound pressure level, the M80 possesses characteristics similar to those of a condenser microphone in a stable dynamic microphone design, making it suitable for both stage and recording applications for vocals, instruments, or drums.

TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik has created the M80 as a superior alternative to the overly colored character of the "industry standard microphone."

Thanks to the low mass of the capsule and the super-thin yet remarkably robust capsule diaphragm, the M80 allows for excellent sound transmission, such as vocal performances that are typically only expected from studio condenser microphones.

The microphone head and capsule design are intended to reduce the proximity effect, which can unnaturally boost the low frequencies of a voice. Nevertheless, the microphone sounds very grounded and solid in the bass while remaining "open" and "airy," without generating unwanted feedback in the upper midrange.
