The portable DR-05X allows you to make high-quality stereo recordings in MP3 or WAV format at a resolution of up to 96 kHz and 24-bit on microSD memory cards with a capacity of up to 128 gigabytes. Its pair of microphones has an omnidirectional polar pattern, can handle sound pressure levels of up to 125 dB SPL, and is still sensitive enough to capture every detail. You can also use your own microphone or a line-level source, connecting it via a stereo mini-jack socket, which also provides power to small microphones where required.

The DR-05X can be operated quickly and easily with a single thumb. Tasks such as recording, adjusting the level, deleting unwanted takes and adding brands can be carried out with a single button press. Further features such as a low-cut filter, variable playback speed, a chromatic tuning function and more can be accessed via the multilingual menu (English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, German, Russian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese). In addition to manual level control, there are three different automatic functions to choose from (limiter, peak reduction, auto-level), which can help prevent distortion during recording. There is also an automatic level balancing function that can smooth out sudden volume spikes during playback, and a built-in speaker for quickly checking recordings. Enhance the input or output signal with one of six reverb effects and use the overdub function to, for example, add a guitar solo to a recording you may have made earlier in the rehearsal room. When recording an overdub, a new file is created whilst the original is preserved – so you can repeat the session as often as you like.

Dictation mode makes it easy to skip forwards and backwards during playback at pre-set time intervals. It can be combined with variable speed and a dedicated speech EQ, which is helpful, for example, when transcribing recorded meeting minutes. The new over-dubbing feature also allows you to set a starting point from which an existing recording is overwritten, just like with a conventional tape recorder.
