Product details
When Georg Simmel received an appointment as an extraordinary professor of philosophy at the Berlin Friedrich-Wilhelms-University - now Humboldt University - in 1900, it was against the fierce opposition of the academic establishment and anti-Semitic circles in politics. The Berlin University was Simmel's alma mater: he had studied, earned his doctorate, and qualified there; he would teach and research for many years without a salary until his move to Strasbourg, where he finally became a full professor of philosophy just a few years before his death. Nevertheless, Simmel's years in Berlin were his most fruitful, during which he not only created his major sociological works but also became the star of the university through his sensational lectures. This volume gathers 26 notes and transcripts of Simmel's lectures, written by, among others, Ernst Robert Curtius, Georg Heym, Edith Kalischer, Harry Graf Kessler, Adolf Löwe, Georg Lukács, Rudolf Pannwitz, Robert E. Park, Arthur Ruppin, Gottfried Salomon, Herman Schmalenbach, Kurt Singer, and Margarete Susman. Together with two colleague notebooks, they provide insight into Simmel's teaching as it was received by some of his students, all of whom would later achieve fame themselves.
