The first 16-55mm (equivalent to 24-82.5mm full-frame) APS-C zoom lens from Sony with a constant F2.8 aperture is very compact and delivers performance worthy of the G series. A new optical design enables high resolution from the center of the image to the edges and beautiful bokeh effects. It is compact, lightweight, and versatile. Two AA and two aspherical elements correct aberrations for high resolution from the center to the edges. Three ED glass elements minimize chromatic aberration. Sony's AR nano-coating provides high resistance to ghosting and flare for sharp contrast. Precise control of spherical aberrations and a circular aperture with nine blades create smooth bokeh.

Thanks to the optimized mechanical and optical design, the weight of the compact 16-55mm zoom lens (equivalent to 24-82.5mm full-frame) with a constant F2.8 aperture is only 494 grams. Together with a compact E-mount body, this lens forms a mobile, handy system for a wide range of applications—from portraits to everyday snapshots. This APS-C lens utilizes the same type of XD linear motor that maximizes focus performance in the G Master Series. The XD linear motor leverages the potential of the camera body, allowing for focusing and tracking of even fast-moving subjects with impressive speed and precision. With its quiet operation, filmmakers can take advantage of the constant F2.8 aperture.

Bayonet lens mount

A lens mount is an interface — mechanical and often also electrical — between a photographic camera body and a lens. It is confined to cameras where the body allows interchangeable lenses, most usually the single lens reflex type or any movie camera of 16 mm or higher gauge. Lens mounts are also used to connect optical components in instrumentation that may not involve a camera, such as the modular components used in optical laboratory prototyping which join via C-mount or T-mount elements.
