Very good price-performance ratio!
Up to 400mm, this lens easily keeps up with Canon's 100-400mm 4.5-5.6L. It is a little slower, but has a slightly better IS. Sharpness is really good, only drops slightly at the top (around 550mm). However, due to the largest aperture, you need good light for good photos. The AF sometimes struggles, especially when the light conditions are not perfect.
Handling this lens needs practice. 600mm is not the same as 400mm. Especially on an APS-C camera. I get best results with the following settings: >550mm, min. 1/1600, 6.3 or better 8.0, tripod, IS switched off, AF on a field, servo, good light.
The IS is ok, but it is better to use a tripod (IS must be switched off).
The lens is sturdily built. The weight is at the upper limit for freehand photography.
Conclusion: Image quality is good enough even for higher demands, but use needs practice. Price is very good!

For the price, it's an excellent telephoto camera (made in China though...).
On the other hand, you can't have everything and you shouldn't plan to use it in (very) low light conditions. The AF is not as good as Canon's great whites with fixed focal lengths, but it does well and can even be counted on in AI servo. The stabilisation is very useful and also plays its role well.
The construction seems to be good even if I personally feel that the plastic is too present. But Tamron offers a 10 year warranty in Switzerland, which is quite something!
In the end, and this is what counts, the images are of good quality, even if the bokeh is perfectible. At 400mm, I find it superior (in terms of image rendering) to the good old Canon 100-400.
That said, perhaps the 400mm Tamron is not quite 400mm and is a bit shorter. I think at most, on a full frame body, it should be 560-570mm and not quite 600mm.
But you shouldn't dream: at this price, such performance and versatility is just extraordinary. Not to mention that it doesn't even weigh 2kg.
For those who don't usually use such long focal lengths, beware of the wind: when hand-held (and even on a tripod), as soon as the wind picks up, and if the light is a bit lacking, taking a sharp picture becomes increasingly difficult due to the length of the lens.

After two weeks of trying it out, including the last few days at Air14 (payerne), I can confirm that this lens is excellent value for money.
It's not as good as a Canon L (e.g. the 100/400) but it's half the price and more versatile.
In the end, for daytime photography, it is a perfect lens!
(You need a bag to carry it as it is long and heavy...
