Best slide scanner for my needs so far

Excellent scanner for 35mm slides. I am scanning all my slides from the previous century. With Epson's own software on the Mac, I get excellent results that are very close to the original. In the software, except for ICE, switch off all image-altering measures and scan in 6400 dpi / 48 bit. Then, in image processing, sharpen the image generously with an unsharp mask and raise the black point and contrast slightly. Voila! The images are very close to the original and can be printed on A3+ and viewed on a 55" 4K TV. I didn't touch the Silverfast software ... unfortunately I had already had bad experiences with it in the past...

For all those who are worried about the glass of the negative holders - this is only present on the side facing away from the scan and therefore does not affect the scan result. ICE works and the flatness is good.

    • Holders with glass on one side ensure excellent flatness

    Contra

    • Quite large unit

Does not scan at right angles

Despite replacement and repair, this scanner cannot scan a right angle. Rectangles always become parallelograms. The fundamental problem is probably an unstable scan carriage that "lags" on one side. Supposedly, the problem was solved after the repair at the service. But after returning the machine to the customer, the problem reappeared. Since this also occurred with the exchange unit, there is probably a fundamental construction problem.

    • No warm-up time as LED operated

    Contra

    • Does not scan at right angles

    See above.

The delivery went very well despite the corona virus situation. The scanner, which is my fifth flatbed, is by far the best so far. However, there is one drawback that should not be there. The SilverFast 8 version supplied is not compatible with MacOs 10.15 Catalina. The CD belonging to it could not even be read. Catalina only works with 64 bit. I then ordered a new version online from LaserSoft Imaging and had it upgraded to 'SilverFast Ai Studio 8'. Now everything works perfectly. However, this cost me an additional 99 euros.

    Pro

    • Scanner and delivery

    Contra

    • SilverFast SE8 software included
