Does the USB port on the PC need to be DP compatible? Or does the HDMI port also work with a normal USB 3.1 Gen2?

Can the display of the laptop be expanded by connecting multiple screens (HDMI, VGA) or can it only be duplicated? Happy New Year and many thanks!
