it says paper capacity expandablei Yes. can you now buy and connect additional compartments or not? if so, what would be the maximum?

A maximum of 2 additional 550-sheet compartments can be hung underneath.
That would make a total of 5, of which 3x are 550-sheet.
Then there's also a base on castors.

I would like to know if it is possible to influence the tray selection for the first page with this printer on a Mac (OS X). I have already looked with HP, but somehow they were not helpful.

With the Maverick with HP Printer Update 3.1 it is possible to divide a print job into the first page and the rest. Unfortunately, it is not possible to control the individual trays. With the Windows driver UPD 5.x or a higher version it is possible to control three trays. However, this is the maximum number.
