This is how I "save" the most and ultimately have no investment ruin if the thing unexpectedly gives up the ghost.

Can the scanner recognise OCR fonts?
-> Yes, but it only outputs a TXT file as the result. However, OCR recognition is extremely slow. Patience is required.
