Hello, I have a question about Airprint printing, do we need a WIFI connection or does the IPhone connect directly to the printer via its own protocol?

This is possible without or with a WiFi router.

I have successfully but painstakingly connected the printer to the network but it never wakes up from sleep mode when I want to print. I have to switch it off and on again every time. (Mac El Capitan)
