This question is not easy to answer, as each municipality has its own waste concept. It's best to read the municipal information! Here in Bern, you can either take the battery to a disposal yard or drop it off at the Ökobus (which visits every neighbourhood several times a year). Your car garage may also be able to dispose of the lead-acid battery for you.
