Should work, you just need an adapter from Thunderbolt to HDMI. I did the same with my Mac
Yes, the graphics card supports a maximum resolution of 2560x1600. However, I would recommend a monitor that has a DisplayPort or even a miniDisplayPort connector (miniDP and DP are intercompatible with the appropriate cable) so that you can connect the monitor directly to the miniDisplayPort of your laptop and thus not have to use an adapter.
