Yes, a cable is needed for each device to be connected. In the docking station there is a port with 4 USB connections. Depending on the device, the respective cable can be connected there. This makes it compatible for all devices. The tangle of cables can be stored in the box and only one short end sticks out.

A smartphone or tablet can be "docked" without any problems, even with a cover. The grooves between them are wide enough.
I bought the model three weeks ago. All models can be charged. In the All-Dock there is a USB adapter to which you can connect your own charging cable of the iPad/Phone.

The ALl-Dock charging station is connected with a 2-pole device cable. This is included in the scope of delivery.
