Product details
This design comes from a binding dating back to 1893, which houses Voltaire's "Zadig or The Book of Destiny." First published in 1747, it tells the story of Zadig, an ancient Babylonian philosopher. The book is a philosophical treatise that provides thematic inspiration for modern detective fiction, including Edgar Allan Poe's C. Auguste Dupin.
François-Marie Arouet (1694–1778), known as Voltaire, was a writer, philosopher, poet, playwright, historian, and polemicist of the Enlightenment. The diversity of his literary works is only surpassed by their volume: nearly 20,000 letters and more than 2,000 books, totaling about 15 million words.
Voltaire was born in Paris and was the son of a respected lawyer who wanted his son to follow in his footsteps. The young Arouet changed his name to Voltaire and quickly began to make a name for himself as a writer.
Not only known as a prolific writer and poet, Voltaire is also famous for his views and ideas on rational religion and freedom. He was a man of reason and had an aversion to superstition. He sought to promote his philosophies through his writings and spread his message across borders and cultures.
This beautiful binding originally housed Voltaire's "Zadig or The Book of Destiny," his most popular work after "Candide." The book was published in 1747, and this binding was crafted in 1893 by Chamerot et Renouard in Paris. "The Book of Destiny" tells the story of an ancient Babylonian philosopher named Zadig. It is an example of how Voltaire used a narrative to comment on the issues of his time.
Thanks to this passionate and impressive contribution to the Enlightenment, this era is also referred to as the Age of Voltaire.
