This motif adorned a cover from 1893 that contained Voltaire's Zadig or The Destiny. Zadig was first published in 1747 and tells the story of the philosopher Zadig from Babylon. The philosophical treatise provided thematic inspiration for the modern detective novel, including Edgar A. Poe's C. Auguste Dupin.
