The OM designation in a fiber optic cable defines the quality class of a multimode fiber optic cable. The classification distinguishes four classes (OM1 to OM4). The distinction is made based on the level of optical attenuation and the possible transmission rate and distance. The fiber categories OM3 and OM4 are intended for high-speed applications such as 10/40/100 Gigabit Ethernet or Fibre Channel at 850 nm. OM3 multimode fibers have an Effective Modal Bandwidth (EMB) of 2 GHz x km.
