They are each half neutral gray tinted, smoothly transitioning into the uncolored filter half. The rotatable Haida filter holder allows for precise horizontal alignment when the filter is securely attached. A Haida gray graduated filter is primarily used to balance an overly bright sky. For exposure measurement, the camera or handheld light meter should be aimed down at the correctly exposed foreground without the graduated filter. This way, the optimal effect for the sky is almost always achieved automatically. Exposure adjustments to compensate for the absorption in the dense part of the graduated filter should be kept minimal to avoid overly diminishing the filter effect.
