The rechargeable batteries are lead-lead dioxide systems. The diluted sulfuric acid electrolyte is absorbed and immobilized by separators and plates. If the battery is accidentally overcharged and generates hydrogen and oxygen, special check valves allow the gases to escape to prevent excessive pressure buildup. Otherwise, the battery is completely sealed and therefore maintenance-free, leak-proof, and usable in any position.
