La qualità di un temperamatite si nota soprattutto dalla sua lama. Le matite di grafite, grazie alla mina robusta e dura, possono essere appuntite perfettamente. Le matite colorate invece con la mina più morbida vengono appuntite in modo meno "afffilato". Si cosiglia la sostituzione del temperamatite non appena affila con minore precisione. Questo evita la rottura delle mine.
