Why do you need a neutral density graduated filter?
Digital cameras have a dynamic range of about 12 EV (EV = Exposure Value – 1 EV corresponds to one f-stop; +1 EV = double the amount of light). In contrast, the human eye has a dynamic range of 20 EV. This means that we can perceive significantly more detail from the brightest to the darkest areas in an image than a camera can capture.
As a result, when photographing scenes with large brightness differences, either the dark areas become black, or the bright areas are overexposed and washed out, losing detail. Impressive cloud formations can easily disappear from the image, ruining landscape shots.
A neutral density graduated filter partially darkens the overly bright areas, such as the sky in a landscape photograph. This reduces the dynamic and contrast range of the image to a level that the camera can capture. In the landscape image, both the ground and the sky become clearly visible. Since the bright areas in the image can vary, the graduated filter is rotatable.
Dörr Digiline Neutral Density Graduated Filters
The Dörr Digiline graduated filters are made from durable resin material (synthetic resin), which is significantly less fragile than glass.
The rotatable filter holder for aligning the gradient is made from non-reflective, matte black metal. The soft gradient of the color-neutral screw filter transitions from clear to gray with only 25% light transmission. This corresponds to a reduction of 2 f-stops = 4 times the exposure time extension. The designation according to the logarithmic scale is ND 0.6x.
The Digiline graduated filters are equipped with a front thread, allowing for additional accessories, such as a lens hood, to be screwed on.
