The new development of the EF 1:1.4/35mm L II USM features numerous advanced optical technologies. For the first time, a so-called BR element (Blue Spectrum Refractive) was used, a new optical material
on an organic basis that has been newly developed at the molecular level. Its ability to strongly refract blue light contributes to the reduction of chromatic aberrations. The BR component is an integral part of a compound lens in the lens. Combined with Canon's lens coatings - including Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) - the EF 1:1.4/35mm L II USM delivers results with optimised contrast, minimised reflections and ghosting. With its 35mm fixed focal length, the EF 1:1.4/35mm L II USM lens is suitable for reportage-style shooting, making it a widely used lens for photojournalists and sports or wedding photographers. The 9-lamella iris diaphragm and the high luminous intensity of 1:1.4 make the lens just as suitable for situations with little light as it is for controlling the depth of field for portrait shots with attractive background blur. The new design made it possible to reduce the minimum mounting distance from 30 to 28 centimetres. This now makes a magnification scale of 0.21x possible. Thanks to the ultrasonic motor, the EF 1:1.4/35mm L II USM lens's autofocus quickly focuses on a new subject - with virtually no noise. As usual, the lens ring allows manual focus fine adjustment at any time during photo and video recording. Part of the Canon L Series, the EF 1:1.4/35mm L II USM is designed for intensive use. It has dust and splash water protection as well as a fluorine coating on the front lens for use under the toughest conditions.
