The EF 100 mm 1:2.8L IS USM is part of Canon's professional L-Series and is one of the first lenses with an image stabilizer that detects horizontal and vertical camera movements, making it ideal for shooting from close range.

Hybrid image stabilizer:
The new image stabilizer is optimized for use in a macro lens. In addition to detecting changes in the angle of view and compensating for them, the lens also corrects shifts. This allows for longer shutter speeds: up to two stops at 1x magnification, up to three stops at 0.5x magnification, and up to four stops at normal shooting.
Ultra-low dispersion (UD) lens for excellent image quality:
The integration of a UD lens effectively eliminates chromatic aberrations and is largely responsible for outstanding image quality with high resolution, pronounced contrast, and excellent color reproduction.

The Ring-USM (ultrasonic motor) ensures fast and almost silent autofocus. Manual focusing can be performed at any time without turning off the AF function. The lens has a close-up adjustment limit of approximately 0.3 m.

Das Objektiv von Canon liefert in allen Bereichen einen sehr guten Eindruck. Das Gehäuse ist hochwertig, solide und gut abgedichtet. Die Auflösung ist in allen Bereichen auf hohem Niveau jedoch muss man auf die geeigneten Blendeneinstellungen achten. Zudem treten beim Abblenden Beugungseffekte auf.
An den beiden Testkameras, der EOS 5D MArk III und der EOS 50D machte das Objektiv einen hervorragenden Eindruck, liegt dabei sehr gut in der Hand. ES leistet sich nur am Bildrand ein paar kleine Schwächen, zeigt sich jedoch in der Gesamtbetrachtung als sehr gute Wahl.
Mit optischem Stabilisator kommt das Canon-Makro für 850 Euro daher. Allerdings kann die Konkurrenz das Motiv meist etwas schärfer abbilden, wenn es in die Bildecken geht. Abblenden hebt beide Werte deutlich an, wenn auch nicht ganz auf Konkurrenzniveau. Die Mitte ist bereits offen sehr kontrastreich.
