The neutral gray half of this graduated filter, with a light transmission of 50% (1 stop), darkens the relevant subject area by one stop without altering the color. For example, if the sky is relatively bright compared to the landscape, this is the ideal value for good cloud detail and to prevent the blue sky from fading due to overexposure.

B+W graduated filters are often used in landscape photography to avoid overexposing the sky while correctly exposing the ground. The effect of this filter can only be very limitedly simulated through electronic image editing, as image information is usually lost in overexposed areas.

The filters are each half tinted neutral gray, with a soft transition into the neutral filter half. The rotatable frame allows for precise horizontal alignment when the filter is screwed on. The glass substrate of the B+W gray filter 702 is a plane-parallel ground and finely polished filter disc, ensuring long-lasting high optical quality. The gradient is specifically vapor-coated using thin-film technology. The value indication refers to the dark edge area of the filter: 702 + 2 stops (25% transmission).

The graduated gray filters are equipped with a high-quality MRC coating. MRC (Multi Resistant Coating) filters feature an MC layer that ensures high transmission and maximum anti-reflection. Unwanted stray light is eliminated, resulting in more brilliant colors and higher contrasts. Due to the low residual reflection, MRC reliably prevents ghosting caused by reflections from the sensor surface. Additionally, MRC protects the filter from scratches through increased layer hardness, thus preserving high optical quality. Furthermore, MRC is dirt and water-repellent, making cleaning easier.
