The company, founded in 1946 as Zweckform Schreibwaren und Bürobedarfs GmbH in a former cow shed in Oberlaindern, Bavaria, initially produced successful forms and carbonless books as well as receipt pads and other office supplies. In 1956, it entered into a licensing agreement with the label company of American Stan Avery, who developed the world's first self-adhesive labels.

The sticker boom, the increasing prevalence of various types of printers since the 1970s, and the Post-it phenomenon led to continuous expansions of the product range. Thanks to ongoing modernization and expansions in all areas, as well as new partnerships, Avery Zweckform is now internationally successful. The company is also present on social media and, for example, established an online printing portal in 2010 where consumers can design and print labels, business cards, foils, and more.
