The manufacturer Alpenleder works exclusively with full-grain leather. All products are made from whole hides, the leathers are between 1.2 mm and 3.5 mm thick. Alpenleder uses both cowhide and buffalo leather. These are so-called open leathers, which cannot hide their flaws through structural embossing or colour, but stand by their origin. Each individual hide is checked by a specialist to determine whether it is suitable for the bags. The leathers currently used are all vegetable tanned: no toxic chrome salts are used in the tanning process, instead the leathers are tanned with tree bark.
