Product details

These displays are small, about 1 inch in diameter, but very readable due to the high contrast of an OLED display. This display consists of 128x64 individual white OLED pixels, each of which can be turned on or off by the control chip. Since the display generates its own light, no backlighting is required. This reduces power consumption for operating the OLED and is the reason for the high contrast; we really like this miniature display for its clarity!

This breakout can be used with either an SPI or I2C interface, selectable by soldering two jumpers on the back. The design is fully 5V compatible, with an integrated regulator and a built-in boost converter. It has never been easier to connect directly to your 3V or 5V microcontroller without needing a level shifter!

We have a detailed tutorial and example code in the form of an Arduino library for text and graphics. You will need a microcontroller with more than 1K RAM, as the display needs to be buffered.

You can download our SSD1306 OLED display Arduino library, which comes with example code. The library can print text, bitmaps, pixels, rectangles, circles, and lines. It requires 1K RAM since it needs to buffer the entire display, but it is very fast! The code is easy to adapt to any other microcontroller.

Technical Details

Dimensions:

  • PCB: 38mm x 29mm (1.5" x 1")
  • Screen: 25mm x 14mm
  • Thickness: 4mm
  • Weight: 8.5g
  • The power consumption of the display depends entirely on your usage: each OLED LED draws power when it is on, so the more pixels you have lit, the more power is consumed. In practice, they draw about 20mA, but for precise numbers, you will need to measure the current in your usage circuit.
  • This board/chip uses a 7-bit I2C address between 0x3C-0x3D, selectable with jumpers.
