FRAM, or ferroelectric RAM, is the latest data storage method that all the fashion magazines are talking about. Oh wait, no, that's quilted handbags. But FRAM is really cool too! It is similar to dynamic memory with random access, but with a ferroelectric layer instead of a dielectric layer. This gives it stable handling (the bytes you write are non-volatile) with dynamic responsiveness (you can access them very quickly!).
With our I2C FRAM breakout board, you can now add some FRAM memory to your next DIY project. FRAM allows for lower power consumption and faster write performance. It is excellent for low-energy applications or data logging with inconsistent performance or data buffering, where you want to stream data quickly while retaining it even when there is no power. Unlike Flash or EEPROM, there are no pages to worry about. Each byte can be read or written up to 10,000,000,000,000,000 times, so you don't have to worry about wear leveling.
This specific FRAM chip has 256 Kbits (32 KBytes) of storage, interfaces using I2C, and can operate at I2C rates of up to 1 MHz. Each byte can be read and written instantly (like SRAM), but retains storage for 95 years at room temperature.
We have adopted the largest chip that has I2C and is also 5V compatible. You can use this chip with either 3V or 5V power and logic. It comes in a breadboard-friendly breakout and a replacement stick of 0.1" male header for soldering.
