The week in review: greedy platforms and heavy losses

As well as numerous product reviews, two controversial stories about large platforms kept the digital editorial team busy this week. Domi also reminisced about the E3 gaming expo, which has now closed for good.

Kevin’s currently testing a whole host of peripherals. This week, he put a premium headset, a Switch controller and a keyboard through their paces. Though the latter makes for a wonderfully tacky set of Christmas lights, Kevin reckons it’s pretty mediocre for typing.

Lorenz was left equally unenthused after testing the new Samsung Galaxy S23FE. When he pitted it against the original S23, he decided the new Fan Edition wasn’t a good deal at its current price.

Jan, on the other hand, was impressed by the cryptically named Cherry KW X ULP keyboard. It’s flat, but still has mechanical switches.

Debora fell down a home cinema rabbit hole, quickly finding her way from tinny TV speakers to a 5.1 Dolby Surround system. Read her article to find out what she learned about the set-up process.

Image stabilisation specs are just one of those things. The official figures usually only apply in the best possible scenario. How do the camera brands arrive at their specs? And how far removed are they from the reality? David put these questions under the microscope.

Imagine if you suddenly saw your video footage on SRF, even though you’d never sold it to them. This is exactly what happened to Swiss photographer Stefan Forster, who discovered online thieves were selling his videos on Shutterstock. I interviewed him for my report on the case.

In the music business, tensions are running high between artists and streaming platforms. Spotify is set to stop paying for songs with fewer than 1,000 streams per year, a move that’s generated criticism. Lorenz reported what performers had to say on the matter.

Domi played the God of War expansion Valhalla and absolutely loved it. He also looked back on the best moments of E3, the legendary gaming expo that’s now officially been laid to rest.

The death knell also sounded for The Day Before. Fntastic, the developer behind the game, closed its doors, causing quite the stir. Debora reported on the scandal in detail.

Our last week-in-review article is also a preview. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be showing you our personal desk set-ups. Michelle’s kicking things off with a look at her brightly coloured workstation.

My fingerprint often changes so drastically that my MacBook doesn't recognise it anymore. The reason? If I'm not clinging to a monitor or camera, I'm probably clinging to a rockface by the tips of my fingers.
