"Ghost of Yotei" is now also a roguelite
The samurai open-world game 'Ghost of Yotei' was one of the highlights of last year. Now it continues! The developers at 'Sucker Punch' are adding a rogue-lite mode, which I was able to play-test.
The open-world game «Ghost of Yotei» divided opinions last year. I was thrilled by the beautiful open world and the fluid combat system. Others, including my colleague Phil, turned their noses up at it because the game structure of «Ghost of Yotei» can feel stale and repetitive.
I doubt that the new «Most Wanted» mode will unite these two camps. After the open world, we now have this roguelite mode, where I can take down the bosses from the main game, the so-called «Yotei Six», in individual runs.
This plays characteristically for roguelites like «Saros»: A run consists of several waves of enemies. If I die, I have to start over. However, certain upgrades are permanent, so my character gets stronger and stronger.
Roguelite instead of open world
Each run has a final boss. First, I fight against several waves of normal enemies. Once I have defeated them, I can choose advantages, such as new weapons or gimmicks that help me in battle. Once the run is over, I can use the money I've earned to unlock permanent advantages – whether I won or died.
In principle, the «Most Wanted» mode simply leaves out the open world – i.e., exploring the world and the story – and focuses solely on combat. To ensure this doesn't get boring in the long run, there are four characters to unlock, all of which play very differently with their abilities. Atsu, for example, can unleash wolves on enemies. Oyuki can ignite smoke bombs and take out enemies in the smoke immediately.
It still packs a punch
Because I still really like the combat system and am not averse to roguelites, I really like this mode. The developers at «Sucker Punch» are masters at copying and improving mechanics. However, there is no real innovation compared to other roguelites. Here is a merchant who sells me amulets and recipes. There is one who has weapons on offer. The longer I play, the more progress I make. Everything is balanced and still looks great.
The «Most Wanted» mode is available in the Complete Edition of «Ghost of Yotei» either as a full version or as an upgrade in the PlayStation Store for around 15 francs or euros. Also included in the package is the story DLC «Echoes of Sekigahara», which expands the main game with a new storyline. As a fan, I don't have to think twice... Phil probably disagrees.
«Ghost of Yotei: Complete Edition» is available from October 1st in the PlayStation Store, as an upgrade or full version. It is not yet clear whether we will get a disc version in our range. Sony provided me with a copy in advance.
