Sales of electric car charging stations double on Galaxus
High fuel prices are driving sales of electric cars and, as a result, feeding demand for home charging stations. On Galaxus, sales of electric car charging stations have doubled compared to last year. Read on to find out what the most popular brands and charging capacities are, as well as what to look out for when buying a wall box.
«Electric car market booming due to fuel price shock,» read a headline on the Swiss news outlet blick.ch this July. In August, ADAC Germany reported a 75.1 per cent increase in electric car registrations compared with the previous year. And on Galaxus, sales of charging stations for electric cars rose 97 per cent in 2026 (January to August) compared with the same period the previous year. In other words, sales have nearly doubled. In previous years, growth rates had only hovered between 20 and 30 per cent.
«We’ve managed to significantly increase our sales of electric vehicle charging stations in both Switzerland and the EU,» says Anthony Gullo, the Galaxus Category Business Manager responsible for electric vehicle charging stations and accessories. «Even people who, a year or two ago, had no intention of purchasing an electric car, are now opting to buy one as a result of high fuel prices. At the same time, we’ve been building on our partnerships with manufacturers, allowing us to offer our customers more attractive prices and better availability,» Anthony says.
«So the sales growth we’ve recorded is partly down to our range expanding. The vast majority of it, however, is as a result of overall market growth.»
Brands: Juice and Easee lead the market, but are losing market share
Together, Juice Technology and Easee accounted for more than half (52 per cent) of all car charging station sales on Galaxus and Digitec in 2022. In 2026, the two brands make up 23 per cent of the market – although they’re still selling more devices than they were four years ago. With a wider variety of brands now available, would-be charger buyers have much greater choice – and are taking full advantage.
In 2022, the top nine brands accounted for 80 per cent of car charging station sales. In 2026, that figure has fallen to just 50 per cent, as more and more brands have entered the market.
The most popular chargers have a maximum charging capacity of 11 or 22 kilowatts. In fact, nine out of ten electric car charging stations sold on Galaxus have that capacity. Wall boxes with a capacity of up to 11 kilowatts have to be registered, with models boasting capacities of up to 22 kW even requiring a permit (both in Germany and in Switzerland (PDF)) (linked pages in German).
What to bear in mind when buying a car charging station
Before you a buy a charging station for your electric car, you should check its maximum charging capacity. For most electric cars, an 11-kilowatt wall box is more than enough; it’ll fully charge your car’s battery overnight. Charging stations should always be installed by a licensed electrician, as you can’t simply connect them to your standard household electrical system. If you want to hook up your wall box to solar panels or control it via an app, you should look for a smart model with load management (article in German).
So will the uptick in wall box sales continue? Well, it likely depends on how fuel prices and electric car sales change over the coming months. However, one thing is clear: at-home electric car charging boxes are no longer a niche product.
