Purchasing advice for USB sticks: data storage devices for your pocket
by Jan Johannsen

Despite the cloud and central company servers, portable storage media are still essential. They allow you to have your data at hand quickly and securely – no matter where or on which device.
Here’s a short overview of the range of external data carriers available for mobile use in the work environment – including their main differences as well as a selection of the most popular products among our business customers.
Traditional hard disk drives (HDDs) are still the most sought-after solution among external storage media in the business environment. A portable hard drive is an easy way to have large amounts of data available when you’re on the go. They’re also great for exchanging data between devices. Thanks to their large storage capacities, you can also use them to keep a data backup in an off-site location.
For fast data processing performance, at least the USB 3.0 standard should be supported. Many hard drives already feature a USB Type-C port, which is the default on current laptops.

They fit in your pocket and are compatible with almost every laptop or desktop. On top of this, they’re very robust. Their storage capacity ranges up to 1000 GB and the read and write speeds also reach an ultra-fast 1000 MB/s – thanks to USB3.2.

Show allSmall 2.5'' hard drives are particularly practical as they don’t require an external power supply. They usually have a storage capacity of up to 5TB. Larger 3.5" hard drives don’t only offer more storage capacity than the smaller ones, they’re also significantly faster and offer a data processing performance of around 250 MB/s.
SSDs (solid-state drives) have some advantages over conventional hard disk drives (HDDs) and are becoming increasingly popular. They’re much faster and work silently, as they have no mechanical parts. This also makes them less sensitive to shocks, jolts and vibrations. Furthermore, SSDs with smaller dimensions are more convenient for transportation. Last but not least, they also require less power and create less heat loss.

Many laptops feature card slots that can read and write flash memory of the SD, SDHC or SDXC card types. These cards – together with small USB sticks – are probably the most compact solution for transporting data. They even fit in a wallet. A cover is recommended for protection. Make sure the card type is compatible with the card slot in your laptop or that a fitting adapter is included. A USB adapter allows you to use your memory card with devices that don’t come with a card reader.
