Fujifilm GFX100S: Fujifilm shrinks its powerhouse

The new Fujifilm GFX100S medium format camera offers roughly the same performance as the previous top model, the GFX100. But it’s significantly smaller, lighter and less expensive.

Medium format cameras have an even larger sensor than full-frame cameras. That means even better light sensitivity and an even higher resolution. But it also means that these cameras are even bigger, heavier and more expensive. Fujifilm’s previously undisputed flagship, the GFX100, delivers this with a 100-megapixel sensor, a weight of 1.4 kilograms without lens, and a five-figure price tag.

But Fujifilm has always strived to minimise these drawbacks in order to make medium format cameras suitable for more people. The GFX50R, and now also the new GFX100S, are proof of this. It terms of performance, the GFX100S is comparable to the GFX100. But it’s about 6 centimetres smaller in width and 500 grams lighter. And it’s less expensive than Sony’s most expensive full-frame camera.

The new GFX100S has a mode dial, which is quite unusual for Fujifilm. Fujifilm’s typical retro-style camera controls – with dedicated dials for shutter speed and ISO – take up a relatively large amount of space, as a comparison with the GFX50S shows.

80mm lens

Fujifilm has also announced a new lens for the medium format system: an 80mm prime lens with f/1.7. Despite the high lens speed, it’s not very big (99 mm) or heavy (795 grams). The angle of view corresponds to about 63 millimetres in a full-frame camera. The lens is also dust- and water-resistant.
