Does this plug also work without Wi-Fi when installed or does it always need the app for control?

The plug is relatively "dumb". Schedules are not saved locally in the device. A "backend" is always required. This can be the official cloud from myStrom or your own cloudless home automation software. Nothing really works without WLAN...
