Question about Joby Gorillapod GP8
What about the baseplate? Do I need another one or is it included in the ball head? Do I need to buy anything else?

There is already one pre-assembled with a 3/8" thread (DSLR) and an adapter to 1/4" (video cameras). So you don't have to buy anything extra.
