We connect an HP Elitebook 840 in an UltraSlim Docking via Dispalyport to HDMI to a Samsung TV and get no picture. If we plug Displayport directly into the laptop, it works. Why doesn't it work via the docking station?

It is possible that the docking station has an old firmware. The current firmware should be 2.33 or higher. A google search for "ultraslim doch firmware" will quickly give you a green light.
