To what extent are the AirPods currently connectable with two devices at the same time - i.e. in such a way that you can listen to a Whatsapp message on your Android smartphone while watching a film on your iPad? Until now, only a few headphones (e.g. those from RHA) could do that - has that changed with Bluetooth generation 5.x?

Nothing has changed (yet) with the new devices. Although the technical prerequisites are now in place. I think that when something like this comes, Apple will want to introduce it as easily as possible for as many devices as possible. So they wait until other hardware also supports it and release such features at some point. With the almost seamless transition from one Apple device to the next, the use case is of course rather limited and still open.
