A "top athlete" gets a massage every day from one of the 5 therapists around them - so the product is relatively unnecessary for them. This product is aimed at very athletic people who go all out every now and then and then have sore muscles for 5 days. You have to know what you are doing and it is hard to massage in some places (back, and hamstrings). So it's certainly not bad to have a partner who knows what they are doing.
