In Windows, you can reassign the keyboard and then have the German characters on the US keys. If you write blind, it's no problem. But you can also leave the US keyboard in Windows and use ALT y for ü, for example. ö is ALT p and ä is ALT q. I use the US layout and for the special characters I use the ALT key combination. It's a matter of taste.
