So if I understand correctly, the Sync Box also needs to adapt the light colours to the images being played?

Sorry do I understand this correctly, I can also operate the strips without the Sync Box and can thus control the strips normally via the app and can buy the Sync Box later if necessary.

That is correct. Without the Sync Box, the Stripe can only be used as a normal light and controlled via the App like any other Hue light.
